A Message From Sally...

Welcome to Vreseis Limited. In this web you will find images, descriptions, and current retail prices for Foxfibre® cotton products. Thank you for your interest.

The natural colors of cotton have fascinated those of us who work with fibers for a long time. My work with naturally colored cotton began with a simple question: could the short fiber of the wild brown cotton be improved without losing the lovely color? After only three years of plant breeding, I was stunned to find that the brown color was actually hiding green, red, and pink. These unexpected cotton lints were given to handspinner study groups who helped me discover other unique qualities. My plant breeding program took on the task of not only improving the fiber quality, but also increasing the color spectrum.

Experimental machine processing by John Price at the International Center for Textile Research and Development first demonstrated the improvements that had been made. To the best of my knowledge, this was the first time naturally colored cotton had ever been processed with modern textile machinery. Thanks to the help of many, we now enjoy something both ancient and new. The excitement I feel offering these cottons to you is matched only by the gratitude I have for all of the handspinners who have supported my efforts in the past. Without their interest and experimentation, I would not have been able to progress to this level.

At the farming end, I am personally dedicated to a sustainable approach to agriculture. All of the cotton from my plant breeding nursery is certified organic. Changes in farming practices did take many years, but the farmers now growing the cotton have adopted organic methods. My goal to develop organic methods that are suitable for large-scale production of Foxfibre cotton has been achieved.

Over the years, my plant breeding program has developed an exciting range of fiber types and shades of color in the greens and browns. New seed material given to me by spinners and most recently by public seed banks has proven to be a source of optimism in my quest for new colors. I am looking forward to the many years ahead with hopes of new discoveries. It is my belief that with continuous, patient labor, a treasure of natural color will be found.

In closing, I would like to assure you that the newest and finest fibers will always come from my plant breeding nursery. They will always be passed from my heart to your hands.

Best wishes for all of your creative efforts.

A Bit of History

Cotton was domesticated in the Americas at least 4500 years ago. In contrast to the Old World cottons domesticated for animal feed, New World cotton was domesticated for its fiber and medicinal uses. Bearing lint in tones of gray, brown, tan, and white, cottons were selected from the tropical wilds. It is believed by some scholars of ancient textiles that other colors - such as blue, purple, pink, and green - were also developed by the ancients. However, most naturalists consider the oral histories to be mythology and that these colors were produced with natural dyes.

Cotton in shades of brown through rust and tan currently grows in the places of original domestication including Peru, Ecuador, Central America, Mexico and Southeastern USA. The lint from these plants is used to make special garments. The short coarse fibers require both more skill and patience to spin by hand into yarn.
