raw organic merino wool by the ounce, pound and or fleece

from 3.00

Raw organic merino wool by the whole fleece, or by the pound or ounce and by the color in the grease (still needs to be washed) whole . I do not coat my sheep, but the wool is very clean and free of VM. I send most of the wool from my sheep to be made into the yarn and sliver that I sell on this website and to A Verb for Keeping Warm's for their fabulous Pioneer yarn. But of the 160-200 sheep shorn every year, I save some of the cleanest and strongest fibered ones to sell to hand spinners. This year licensed classer Stephany Wilkes, assisted by Helen Tre and Maggie Smith selected a number of these fleeces specifically for hand spinners. Beginning on 10.5.17 I will be adding photos of these particular fleeces to this section of the shop and selling them as whole fleeces by the sheep's ear tag number. Colors are: white, brown, silver and black. All are fine with  beautiful crimp. If you want a sample of this wool, just buy an ounce of it. My flock is registered organic with the CDFA, my farm is certified Organic and Biodynamic by Stellar/Demeter. These sheep come from the Australian Merino flock of Bill and Helga Olkowski imported in the mid 80's and organic all this time. New genetics came from the incredible breeding program of Janet Hepler of Covelo, CA.

These sheep are a critical component of my farm's carbon sequestration plan. Recently tested by Fibershed's association with the Gaudin lab at UCDavis, it was determined that the soil organic matter went from 1% to 2.6% in just the 19 years that I have tended this land. I attribute this monumental gain in soil organic matter to both the heirloom Sonora wheat production, the Foxfibre® breeding nursery and these sheep, who eat all the stubble of the crops transforming the aerial portions that remain after harvest to a form that is available to the soil microbes for sequestration. When I did the math taking the pounds of carbon sequestered on the fields in total and divide that number by the pounds of products that have left the farm, it comes out to 16 pounds of carbon sequestered per pound of product that has left the farm. Including this wool. So, when you hold this wool in your hands, not only is it lovely, fine, clean and pure, from animals tended with love and care. But you are holding onto to the wool of an animal that contributed to the sequestration of a whole lot of carbon.
